Pulmonologists are specialists trained in the comprehensive care of the respiratory system, including the lungs, airways, and related structures vital for breathing and oxygen delivery. They diagnose and treat a wide range of pulmonary conditions, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary fibrosis, lung infections, black lung (pneumoconiosis), pulmonary hypertension, and lung cancer.
Pulmonologists offer medical and procedural treatments to manage respiratory diseases and improve lung function. Their care often includes medication management, pulmonary rehabilitation, oxygen therapy, and smoking cessation programs. They also perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as bronchoscopy, thoracentesis, and lung biopsies. Pulmonologists frequently collaborate with critical care specialists, thoracic surgeons, allergists, oncologists, and respiratory therapists to provide coordinated, multidisciplinary care.
Many pulmonologists pursue additional fellowship training in critical care medicine, interventional pulmonology, and sleep medicine. Their expertise extends to advanced technologies like endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), navigational bronchoscopy, and minimally invasive techniques that enhance diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic outcomes.
