Dentists are specialists who care for the oral health of their patients. Besides the teeth and gums, this may involve the tongue, salivary glands, lymph nodes, as well as the muscles and nerves of the head and neck. A dentist may be consulted for issues related to the jaw and often help patients who encounter TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders. Preventative care provided by dentists includes teeth cleanings, monitoring the development of the teeth and jaw through x-rays, checking for oral abnormalities that could signal diseases, and promoting proper oral care. Dentists can also diagnose oral diseases, fill cavities, make models of dental appliances such as braces and dentures, and repair or extract teeth.

Dentists may subspecialize in periodontics (care of the gums and bones supporting the teeth), endodontics (root canal treatment), orthodontics (correction of dental / facial structural irregularities), and dental anesthesia. An expert in dentistry may have a DMD (Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry) or a DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery). Both titles reflect completion of study with an accredited dental school.
