Justin Anderson, MBA, PhD, is the Managing Director of Litigation Surveys and Consumer Science at IMS Legal Strategies. He specializes in designing, conducting, and analyzing consumer survey research for intellectual property litigation, advertising claim substantiation, and marketing research.
Dr. Anderson has extensive experience conducting trademark surveys, including those measuring likelihood of confusion (Eveready and Squirt), secondary meaning, genericness (Teflon), fame, and likelihood of dilution. He also conducts consumer perception surveys to assess false or deceptive advertising, materiality, and other aspects of consumer behavior and psychology. He has been retained as a survey expert by private litigants and government agencies such as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the Department of Justice (DOJ), the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General, and the City of Miami Beach, Florida. Dr. Anderson has provided expert witness testimony in federal and state courts, the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the International Trade Commission (ITC), and the National Advertising Division (NAD) of the Better Business Bureau.
Dr. Anderson has moderated roundtable discussions on litigation surveys at International Trademark Association (INTA) meetings, provided CLE seminars about litigation surveys, and presented his research on consumer psychology and brand strategy at American Marketing Association (AMA) conferences. He is a member of the American Marketing Association (AMA), the Association of National Advertisers (ANA), the Brand Activation Association (BAA), the Insights Association, and the International Trademark Association (INTA). He has also served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Brand Strategy and the Trademark Reporter and was a reviewer for Arts and the Market, the Journal of Brand Management, and Marketing Science.
Dr. Anderson joined IMS via the firm's acquisition of MMR Strategy Group, where he held senior roles in marketing and advertising research. His professional career also includes leadership positions at Lieberman Research Worldwide and BBDO Chicago. As a Professor of Marketing, he taught MBA and undergraduate courses in marketing research and consumer psychology, as well as other marketing courses at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW), California State Polytechnic University Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona), and the University of Southern California (USC).
In his military career, Dr. Anderson served as US Air Force Weather Officer and Captain, stationed at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho and Howard Air Force Base in Panama, and deployed to Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. He holds a PhD in Business Administration with a concentration in marketing from the University of Southern California (USC), where he received the Excellence in Teaching Award. He earned an MBA with a concentration in marketing from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, graduating with academic excellence. Dr. Anderson also holds a BS in Atmospheric Science from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, where he was Cadet Commander of Air Force ROTC Detachment 925.
