Emergency Sports Medicine

Emergency sports medicine physicians must be certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM), the American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine (AOBEM), or ABIM (American Board of Internal Medicine). Additionally, they must:

  • Complete an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited sports medicine fellowship
  • Participate in ABEM’s continuing certification process – the AOBEM Osteopathic Continuing Certification (OCC) Program
  • Comply with ABEM Policy on Medical Licensure and Board Eligibility for Subspecialty Certification 

Emergency sports medicine physicians play a critical role in:

  • The management and stabilization of acute musculoskeletal injuries
  • Applicable ordering of musculoskeletal radiographic films, including MRI scans, CT scans, and fluoroscopy
  • Diagnosis and management of concussions
  • Diagnostic ultrasound
  • Complications associated with orthopedic injuries
