An internal medicine expert or internist is a physician specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases not requiring surgery in adults from 18 years old through the geriatric years. They have comprehensive training in all aspects of adult medical conditions and provide care to patients in both the office and hospital setting. An internist specializes in primary care screening and will care for patients with anything from chronic illnesses such as organ failure, diabetes, and hypertension to cancer, strokes, heart attacks, and pneumonia.
An internist is also trained for understanding disease prevention, wellness, substance abuse, mental health issues, and effective treatment of common problems of the eyes, ears, skin, and reproductive organs.
