There’s Neigh Way: Finding an Expert in Horse Psychology

07.28.22

|

We know what our puppy is trying to say when they bark at strangers, cry at the door, or chew up our new shoes when left alone for too long. But can this emotional intelligence be extended to other animals? Can we know whether a horse is stressed?

IMS set out to find horse psychologists to assist in exploring whether situational changes—such as construction—could cause issues for a nearby stable housing racehorses.

Primary Case Issue

Our client represented a party who wished to condemn easements allowing the opposing side to install and maintain a liquefied natural gas pipeline. One of the opposing parties owned a stable on the property and claimed that the underground drilling and activity would cause behavioral problems in the horses, thus detrimentally affecting their racing abilities.

Expert Witness Requirements

  • Equine expert; extensive experience with horses
  • Knowledge of breeding horses
  • Master’s or doctorate degree preferred
  • Able to determine whether drilling would cause behavioral problems in horses or affect their racing ability
  • Prior expert testimony experience preferred

Expert Witness Search

A research team submitted eight experts in one business day. Candidates submitted were experts in veterinary medicine and equine behavior, veterinarians in clinical practices, imprint trainers, professors of pre-veterinary animal science and behavioral medicine, and authors on veterinary and equine medicine and behavior.

Expert Witness Placement

The candidate selected was an expert in general practice with all species and the founder and chief of staff of a veterinary clinic. They were a member of various veterinary and animal behavioral associations, the author of several books on animal behavior (including horses), and a recipient of various professional awards. They also served as a teacher and speaker on equine behavior.

Case Results

The case was dismissed with prejudice.
