Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine

To be eligible to practice emergency undersea and hyperbaric medicine, a physician must:

  • Be certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM)
  • Participate in the ABEM’s continuing certification process
  • Fulfill the ABEM Policy on Medical Licensure

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) helps initiate wound healing by bringing oxygen-rich plasma to oxygen-starved tissue. HBOT reduces swelling of the injured tissue while also flooding it with oxygen to promote healing. At its core, HBOT strives to break the cycle of swelling, oxygen starvation, and the death of tissue.
