Treatment by a military psychiatrist is provided through counseling, medication, and psychotherapy.
Military psychiatrists operate in three core areas:
- Academic psychiatry: This branch most closely resembles psychiatry in the civilian sector and largely focuses on academia and research.
- Clinical psychiatry: Mental illness and its impact on military personnel’s health and well-being are most closely analyzed using clinical psychiatry.
- Operational psychiatry: Operational psychiatry provides consultation to national security programs, military intelligence, and military law enforcement activities in assessment and selection (A&S), organizational consultation, operational consultation, and individual / unit support post-critical incidents.
